Inspiring Leadership: Reflections from the 24th World Teen Parliament Session




In a world where the voices of young people are more critical than ever, the convening of the 24th World Teen Parliament (WTP) session, on December 16, 2023, provided a platform for inspirational leaders to share their experiences and insights, leaving a lasting impact on the minds of attendees. The session kicked off with an invigorating address by Hon. Dr. Frank Habineza, the Vice President of the Social Affairs Committee in Rwanda's Parliament.


Dr. Habineza captivated the audience by recounting his personal journey into politics, a journey sparked by introspective questions about his potential contributions to his country and the problems he could address as an individual. His words resonated deeply with the teens, encouraging them to introspect and contemplate their own roles in shaping society. Beyond politics, Dr. Habineza emphasized the importance of personal health, cautioning against activities that could compromise well-being, and inspiring the audience to strive for greatness in all aspects of life.


Following Dr. Habineza's inspiring address, Mr. Kai Jan Krainer, Member of Parliament from the Austrian National Assembly, Vienna, took charge, With over two decades of political experience, Mr. Krainer shared insights into his work in financial affairs and his role as a college spokesperson for budget matters. His wealth of experience served as a testament to the transformative power of long-term dedication to public service and stood as an example for teens.


The session continued with Hon. Ryan Straughn, Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs in Barbados, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the youth at WTP. He emphasized the importance of quality education for teens and shared his journey of seizing the authority to be their voice. His insights shed light on pressing issues such as digital job opportunities post-pandemic and the need for sustainable tourism.


Throughout the session, teens from various corners of the globe posed thought-provoking questions to the speakers, touching on topics ranging from climate change to digital privacy. Mr. Krainer's statement, "Everybody is born with the same rights and dignity and has one life," resonated deeply, highlighting the universal values that unite humanity.


Hon. Ryan Straughn's reflections on post-pandemic job prospects and the value of mentorship provided invaluable insights into navigating the complexities of the modern world. Finally, the session concluded with remarks from Mr. Daksh Gaur, underscoring the importance of empowering young leaders to drive positive change in their communities and beyond.
