The youngest National Bravery Award Winner on January 26, 2018, Mamata Dalai is mere 6-years of age and belongs to Kendrapara district of Odisha.
In April 2017, Mamata and her sister Asanti were bathing in a pond when a five-feet-long crocodile emerged and attacked Asanti, her 7 years old sister. Mamata tightened her grip on Asanti, fought with her bare hands, screamed loudly to attract the villagers and thus scared away the strayed crocodile. It was later caught by the forest officials of the Bhitarkanika National Park and released it in the river.
Mamata is the youngest recipient of the Bravery Awards this year.
