Raunak Sadhwani, a 12-year old boy from Centre Point School, Nagpur, has recently become an International Master (IM) in Chess. He becomes the youngest IM from Maharashtra and the second IM from Nagpur. The first IM from Nagpur is Anup Deshmukh, who secured the title in 1999.
An IM title necessitates a player to outdo customs with high level performance in Chess contests and to uphold the international rating of ‘Elo’ points (named after its creator Arpad Elo, it is a method of calculating the virtual skill levels of players in zero-sum games). He earned the title at the Felix Cup Tournament held in Romania, from May 25-28, 2018.
Raunak is trained by two Grandmasters, Swapnil Dhopade (the only Grandmaster from the Vidharbha region of Maharashtra) and Amonatov Farrukh. He gives his parents the credit for his success and aims to attain the Grand Master title soon.
